about

In Ursula K. Le Guin's Hainish Cycle books, an "Ansible" is a device capable of instantaneous or faster-than-light communication. It can send and receive messages to and from a corresponding device over any distance or obstacle whatsoever with no delay, permitting the planet-to-planet contact that is essential in the Hainish universe.

The instrumentation on "Ansible" is minimalist, with an underlying drone oscillation that varies in specific pitch, paired with electric bass guitar played quietly with fingers. The bass is run through a tube preamplifier with very high gain, and is then saturated with/rhythmically playing off of a characteristic, full reverse delay. The composition's tone and feel convey the complex mix of optimism, impatience, and underlying dread that would accompany the sending of a message across unfathomable distances of space on a small device - and the hope for a speedy reply.
