In The Dispossessed, influential Annares (anarcho-syndicalist breakaway moon colony) scientists discourage Shevek's development or publication of his discovery of Transflience (a revolutionary breakthrough in space travel), and are particularly disturbed at the prospect of him sharing it with scientists on the political and economic strife-filled Urras. In response, Shevek enlists the support of a small cell of supporters called the “Syndicate of Initiative”, who meet with negative social pressure and even the threat of violence - a dissident cell, fighting for open knowledge, at odds with a delicately-balanced egalitarian society ironically constructed by other dissidents.
In “Syndicate of Initiative”, the primary delay and pitch shifting effects heard in the music are derived from a circuit-bent children's karaoke box, which has a prominent (if unpredictable) preamplifier that provides an underlying wash of sound - a sea-like white noise with distinctly tonal qualities that subtly change form and dynamic as this short piece progresses and builds into its climax.
