"Traitor" is named after a predominant theme from the Ursula K. Le Guin books Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed. In each book, central characters go through a series of trials and tribulations as they end up in the role of envoy between their own societies and ones that are hostile to them. In the process, these characters come under direct threat from powerful individuals and forces on all sides, including being considered traitors by many in their own homelands for bucking the status quo (i.e. Shevek in The Dispossessed).
Continuing aspects of the compositional theme and melodic underpinning from "Davenant", "Traitor" incorporates a mix of sounds from the natural world with music composed in our Berkeley studio - several underwater recordings of icebergs cracking and seals using sonar, layered with multiple tunings of electric bass guitar played with a bow and run through several different types of amplification and delay to create symphonic feedback.
