In The Dispossessed, Shevek describes "Transflience" as "space travel without traversal of space or lapse of time". This folding of time and space, the physicist believes, can be accomplished with the correct theoretical knowledge and appropriate technology. Naturally, a revolutionary prospect such as this ends up attracting a great deal of attention (both negative and positive) from people who hold power.
As befits the deceptive, stark beauty and simplicity of Shevek's theory, and the resultant space travel technology that is used subsequently through Le Guin's Hainish Cycle books, the music for "Transflience" is composed of a very few distinct elements that compliment each other in this melodic piece. An electric bass guitar played through a guitar amplifier, with heavy reverb and a short (but prominent) delay, is combined with a hypnotic drum line characterized by rolling toms and kick drum to simulate the loneliness and elegance of a brilliant physician's imagination. The rhythm and melody sharply juxtapose with key changes and sharp shocks of metallic delay that shoot out as though penetrating into space, conveying the underlying menace that often accompanies real-world application of scientific theory.
